Ester & Erik: Danish Candle Craft and the Magic of the Calendar Candle
An Enduring Love of Candles, Craft, and Quiet Light
There’s something timeless about a candle. The soft glow, the gentle warmth, the way light shifts across a room. In Denmark, candles are part of daily life - not just for holidays or special occasions, but for ordinary moments that deserve a little calm.
Since 1987, Danish candle-makers Ester & Erik have followed a simple idea — that light has the power to change the feel of a space. Their candles are designed not just to be seen, but to be lived with — bringing warmth, calm, and quiet beauty into everyday moments.
Family-owned for nearly four decades, the company grew from Ester and Erik Møller’s shared love of craft and quality. Erik focused on technique and innovation, developing dipping methods and tools still used today, while Ester shaped the subtle details — burn quality, colour, and finish — that define their candles. Each piece reflects that partnership of skill and care, and it’s part of what makes their candles feel so timeless.
Today, their son Søren continues the work, carrying the brand forward while staying close to its roots in Danish craft tradition. Every candle is still made in their Silkeborg workshop, where attention to material, form, and light guides the entire process. The result is a candle that burns beautifully and feels considered in every way — simple, honest, and made to last.
The calendar candle - a quiet December ritual
Among their many designs, the calendar candle holds a special place. In Denmark, it’s a much-loved December tradition: the candle is numbered from 1 to 24 and burned a little each day, gently marking the days until Christmas. It’s less about countdown and more about pause — a moment at the breakfast table, soft light in the evening, a small daily ritual that asks you to slow down.
It’s this ritual we love most from Ester & Erik, and it’s the reason we’ve chosen to offer their calendar candles in our shop — pieces that carry both craftsmanship and meaning, made for homes that value warmth and intention.
